A PICTORIAL HISTORY

Without doubt, MG is one of the best-known marques in the world. From its origins as the sporting by-product of Morris Garages' more conventional cars in the 1920s right up to its renaissance in the MGF of 1995, the MG in all its different forms has captured the imagination of drivers the world over.

John Tipler relates the story of MG, starting with the 1923 Raworth-bodied two seater; the first car to bear  the famous octagonal MG badge, and the 14/40s and more powerful 18/80s that followed soon after.

The Midget, introduced in 1928, was an instant hit, its compact size and modest price- tag making it more widely affordable for enthusiasts. Its popularity was boosted by numerous successes in trials and on the race track, and it soon accounted for more than half of MG's total output. In the halcyon days of the early 1930s, the Midget was joined by an array of Magnas and Magnettes, whose competition derivatives were equally prominent in sport  and in record-breaking. The model range in the latter half of the decade was rationalized, and the expensive competitions department was closed down at the same time.

The TC Midgets were the big sellers in the post-war era, establishing the marque'5 reputation in the crucial US market, setting the stage for the MGA and its successor the MGB of 1962. By the late 1960s, however, MG had fallen victim to corporate  politics, as other cars from the British Motor Holdings (later British Leyland) stable took precedence over the MG product. Yet this is by no means the end of the story: in the early 1990s the Rover Group made the welcome decision to revive the MG as a sports car; fifteen years after the last MGB rolled off the production line. The new K-series engined MGF heralds the marque's jubilant comeback.
